San Diego Scenic Attractions - Cabrillo National Monument #2 - Statue of Juan Cabrillo

Stately monument honoring Cabrillo, discoverer of San Diego Bay, is located in Point Loma that overlooks the city and the Bay.

Rising from the southern tip of Point Loma is the Cabrillo National Monument. The statue depicts Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who, in 1542, was the first European explorer to navigate the Californian coast. From the monument -- which stands 422 feet above sea level -- you can enjoy the amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. You might even spot whales way out in the Pacific between December and March. While you're here, take some time to tour the nearby lighthouse and visitor center, which offers insight into San Diego's maritime history.

The Cabrillo National Monument is open to the public every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
